Fishing in Ireland is a year-round pursuit, but the best time to fish depends on the species and the water. Understanding the seasons helps you plan trips when the fish are most active and, just as importantly, when it is legal to fish for them. This calendar gives an overview of the main opportunities month by month.
Spring: March to May
Spring is the start of the main freshwater season. The trout season typically opens in mid-March, and early-season trout fishing can be excellent as the fish feed actively after the winter. Salmon begin to run in many rivers, and the early spring salmon are often the most sought after.
Sea fishing also picks up in spring as the water warms. Mackerel start to appear in numbers towards the end of May, and bass become more active along the coast. It is a good time to be out on the water.
Summer: June to August
Summer is the peak season for most fishing. Trout fishing is at its best, especially for fly fishing when insects are hatching. Salmon runs continue on many rivers, and the warmer weather makes for comfortable days on the bank.
Sea fishing is superb in summer. Mackerel are abundant, bass are feeding in the surf, and boat fishing for a range of species is at its best. It is also a great time for coarse fishing, with pike, bream and tench feeding well in the warmer water.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn brings change. The trout season winds down towards the end of September, and salmon fishing on many rivers comes to a close. However, autumn is a superb time for sea fishing, as bass feed heavily before the winter and larger fish move inshore.
Coarse fishing remains good through the autumn, and pike fishing in particular improves as the water cools. It is a quieter, often more peaceful time to fish, with fewer anglers on the water.
Winter: December to February
Winter is the quietest season for freshwater fishing, as most trout and salmon seasons are closed. However, there is still fishing to be had. Pike fishing continues on many waters, and some coarse fisheries stay open. Sea fishing can be productive, though the weather is often challenging.
Winter is a good time to plan for the season ahead, service your tackle and book permits for the spring. It is also a great time to learn, as the slower pace gives you space to practise your skills.
Always check the rules
This calendar is a general guide, and the exact dates vary by water and by species. Closed seasons, bag limits and size limits are set to protect fish stocks, and they change. Before you plan a trip, always check the current regulations for the water you intend to fish.

Planning tips
When planning your season, think about what you enjoy most. If you love fly fishing for trout, focus on the spring and summer. If you prefer sea fishing, the summer and autumn are your best bet. If you want a relaxing day with the family, coarse fishing in the summer is hard to beat.
Whatever you choose, book your permits and accommodation early for the peak season, and be flexible with your plans. The weather in Ireland can change quickly, and the best anglers adapt to the conditions.
